Smithfield Tractors provides NSA ‘Tup Taxi’ opportunity for Local Youngster

21st September 2025

A young school leaver from a non farming background has the opportunity to run a Tup Taxi at the NSA Wales & Border Ram Sale on Monday. And it’s all thanks to sale sponsor, Smithfield Tractors.  The Llanelwedd based firm has provided Rafi Watling, with the necessary bike and trailer. It  means he will earn money and gain experience by couriering purchased rams from the sale rings  to their vehicles, along with several other ‘Tup Taxis’.  And he is thrilled, saying I’m pleased Tim has let me borrow the bike so I can now work for the  tup taxis.

Rafi gained a qualification in Agriculture and Construction from Newtown College (NPTC) in July and was keen to take advantage of this opportunity. However the fact that he didn’t have the suitable transportation was a quite an obstacle to overcome for the local youngster from Llandrindod Wells, who is now combining a foundation course in construction with helping on a local farm. In September, Rafi Watling started a foundation course in construction. In his spare time, he can be found helping on a farm in Llanyre, or gathering firewood and mowing lawns. Smithfield Tractors are the main dealers for Honda and for both John Deere and Zetor tractors. They passionately believe in supporting the local community and offer what they describe as ‘a fantastic range of agricultural vehicles to suit all uses and budgets from their base in Llanelwedd’.

Other NSA Wales and Border Ram Sales sponsors include long standing supporter, JG Animal Health, Elanco who are supporting the tup taxis, Boehringer and the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society.
