Boyo will be back
18th September 2017
Shrewsbury farmer Dave Roberts, whose yearling Blue Texel ram topped the breed price at 800 guineas at the NSA Wales & Borders Ram Sales early sale will be back. He’ll be at the main sale next week, but bringing his cheque book and trailer rather than rams.
Dave will be looking for future stock rams at the sale, to be held at the Royal Welsh Showground on Monday, 25 September. It’s become a tradition for him over the years, to sell at the early sale in August and to buy at the main sale.
He says: ”I’ll be looking for pedigree Charollais and Blue Texel rams for my Boyo flocks. It’s just the best place to buy rams and the best rams I have ever bought have come from the Builth sale.
“There is so much choice and some of the better rams go there. It’s the right time to buy rams, they’re not pushed and not forced to get ready. They just come together right, because in my opinion it’s the right time of the year to buy rams.
Dave founded his Charollais flock in 2000 with the winnings from his horse, Dormston Boyo , after a good year culminating in his winning the steeplechase at Worcester. These days he combines racehorse training with breeding sheep, including the Blue Texels he began breeding three years ago, with Builth is a permanent fixture.
His first home bred Blue Texel tup, with ‘great shape and style’ topped the breed price at Builth last month at 800 guineas. A Charollais sold for 900 guineas and the overall average for the eight rams he sold at the early sale was £676.
