Family Tradition
13th September 2016
Carrying on the family tradition, ten year old Esme Davies will be bringing a yearling pedigree Lleyn ram to the Wales & Border Ram Sale on Monday 19 September.
Esme, who lives in Shobdon, Leominster, is the granddaughter of one of the event’s founder members, John L Davies. He and his wife, Sue, were for decades familiar faces at the sale, bringing Hampshire Downs to the event each year at the Royal Welsh Showground.
Shobdon Primary School student Esme says: “I really enjoy learning about sheep and looking after them and also being able to show them in the show ring.”
Her parents, agricultural consultant John Davies of E & J Solutions, and Kington vet Emily Davies, encourage Esme and her seven year old brother Jack to take an interest. They each own one pedigree ewe and are learning to understand how much it costs to keep sheep and to be careful spending the money they earn.
John and Emily say they are extremely happy that Esme and Jack both take a keen interest and are able to learn about the skills needed to run a flock of sheep. Appreciation of farm life and as much time as possible spent outdoors gives them a rounded outlook on life.
